Today we introduce: the TAS pricing tool. It is a challenge for many makers and artists we talk to: how do you calculate a fair, living wage for your handmade work? Too expensive scares off customers, while too cheap means that you, as a maker, are creating for less than minimum wage. To support our TAS sellers, we have channelled our inner ex-banker girlies and developed this useful tool.
At The Artist Survives, we try to increase the appreciation for craftsmanship. However, we also look at what actually constitutes a fair, living wage. This refers to a wage that also allows you to provide for your social security, such as a pension and insurance for sickness or disability.
How can I determine my price as a creative?
In the TAS pricing tool, you can fill in how your products are made in a few simple steps. The pricing tool will show you the recommended TAS retail price. This price is not the absolute truth, but it helps you gain insight into what factors are important to take into account.
How do I determine my hourly rate?
One of the details you fill in is your hourly rate. The minimum freelancer (zzp) rate for a fair wage, including room for insurance and pension, is around 45 euros per hour. Are you still building your craft or transitioning into becoming a full-time maker? Then you can lower your hourly rate. Are you already a big name creating future heritage? Then your hourly rate can, of course, simply go up.
What factors does the TAS pricing tool take into account?
The TAS pricing tool looks at several things:
- Your creation time
- Startup material costs
- Packaging material
- Reproducibility of an item
- Making and material costs per individual item
- VAT percentage
We are very curious about what you think of our pricing tool! Try it out and let us know if you have any feedback or suggestions.
