Jasmijn Vermue

I am a researcher, maker, and designer, currently finishing my Master's in Design at the Piet Zwart Institute. My art practice is rooted in exploring feminism and textile and ceramics crafts. Specifically, I am fascinated by "invisible labour", the unpaid, often unnoticed care work and mending traditionally performed by women in the domestic sphere. I make art to tell these forgotten stories, transforming fleeting moments of care into something permanent. While textiles naturally fade and decay, ceramics are enduring. Drawn in by the medium's rich history and unpredictability, I use ceramics to create physical monuments to this overlooked work. I want people to find a story in my pieces, and to understand what making these objects means to me.

My Creative Process

"My production process is a combination of research, glaze chemistry, and intuitive making. Everything in my shop is thrown entirely by hand on the potter's wheel, without the use of moulds. I utilize an alternative firing technique called saggar firing, where the ceramics are placed in the kiln together with organic and natural materials. This is done inside a sealed container called a saggar. The materials catch fire and paint unique, unrepeatable patterns onto the clay. Because I embrace this slow, deliberate method, a single item is fired three times over a span of nine days. After the saggar process, I glaze the ceramics with transparent glaze at stoneware temperature, making them completely dishwasher-safe and durable for everyday use.
