Zoe Kovacs Illustration

I’m Zoé Kovács, an illustrator and comic artist from Hungary, based in Rotterdam. I spend my free time drawing, making up stories, solving sudoku puzzles and walking in nature. In my practice I enjoy storytelling, exploring the human soul, nature, researching through making and folk art. I find folk art compelling because the authorless, nameless works that constitute the bulk of this genre of art have the power to be extremely intimate and personal in their nature, but at the same time they’re able to achieve a universal relatability with their simplicity and rawness. I like to stick with a free-flowing, unpolished energy in my finished pieces.

My Creative Process

"I prefer bold materials that work quickly, and where I can’t undo or erase my last step: inks with a dip pen, gel pens, paper cutouts, color pencils, crayons and quick-drying graphite aquarelle are among my favorite media. I rely on iteration during my process - I redraw the piece again and again until I get it right. Maybe it means I actually enjoy the dreaded blank canvas that all makers start out with! This way, an illustration may take from three hours up to multiple days. Research is integral to my process as I spend many hours each week researching the visual language of folk art."
