TIME SPENT
A day wandering through the streets of Florence provides a treasure trove of material: from peeling posters and stickers off lampposts to hours spent rummaging through second-hand book markets, looking for old covers and pages. After that comes the process of making the painting itself, layer by layer, spread out over another two to three full days, with moments where I let the work rest and view it from a distance, sometimes even tearing it in half again, only to rebuild it and eventually give it a final finishing touch.
MATERIALS
I used the following in this work: painter's tape, posters and stickers, and book covers from the streets of Florence, TPEX from the containers of the Municipality of The Hague, paint, ballpoint pen, pencil, chalk, markers, glue, paper, books, the back of an empty notepad, poetry cards from a day in Deventer, pieces from previously made work, photo from a previous exhibition for reinforcement.
COSTS
I try to keep my costs as low as possible by working as much as I can with found, second-hand, or gifted materials, and with things I already have at home and in my studio. Still, the actual costs of a painting are often higher than you might think at first glance: a trip to Florence, renting my studio apartment, but also the many art supplies I've collected, bought, and still regularly replenish over the years all contribute to the final cost.
