Studio Lena Poyard

I'm Lena, a weaver and textile designer based in Rotterdam.

I create handwoven textiles for interiors using traditional weaving techniques to make tactile, timeless pieces. I'm inspired by the craft of weaving itself. Its slow rhythm, the way materials intertwine, and the stories that can be woven into cloth.

Many of my works are made using second-hand fabrics and reclaimed ropes through the traditional rag rug technique, giving existing materials a new purpose. Every piece is woven by hand with care, celebrating craftsmanship, sustainability, and the beauty of slow, thoughtful making.

My Creative Process

"Every project begins with drawings and ideas. I explore color combinations, gather materials, and experiment before deciding on the final design. Before I can start weaving, I calculate and prepare the warp threads that will be installed on my loom. Sometimes this preparation takes even longer than the weaving itself.

Once everything is set up, I can finally begin weaving. It takes a little while to settle into the slow, repetitive rhythm, but it soon becomes almost meditative. Depending on the piece, the weaving process can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks. When it's finished, I cut the textile from the loom and carefully complete it by knotting and securing every thread by hand.

I mainly work with reclaimed bed sheets, second-hand fabrics, and ropes, combining traditional weaving techniques with a love for experimentation and giving discarded materials a new life.
