Visual Diary Anja Kok

Visual Diary Anja Kok

Anja Kok is a Dutch painter whose small oil paintings explore everyday life through a series of urban memories and a personal visual diary. Inspired by fleeting moments in the streets, she transforms ordinary scenes into intimate and thought-provoking compositions. Her vibrant colors and unexpected perspectives encourage viewers to rediscover the familiar. Beneath the apparent lightness of her work lie reflections on human behavior, loneliness, and the quiet absurdity of contemporary life. Balancing observation with imagination, Kok creates paintings that are both deeply personal and universally recognizable. She lives and works in the Netherlands.

My Creative Process

"I create small oil paintings inspired by places that catch my attention, whether for positive or negative reasons. I photograph these everyday urban scenes and project selected parts of the images onto the canvas as the starting point for a sketch. From there, I develop each painting in oil through a slow, intuitive process that can take days or even weeks, although some works evolve more quickly. Working with oil paint allows me to build depth, atmosphere, and layers, transforming ordinary moments into personal urban memories."
